Cryovac Inc cuts 180 jobs

Cryovac Inc. in Gates, a subsidiary of Sealed Air Corp., will close its plant and lay off some 180 workers.

Cryovac manufactures food packaging and other protective packaging materials. The plant is on Brooks Avenue.

It is one of two locations Sealed Air is closing in New York. The other is a plant near Albany which employs 70, data with the New York State Department of Labor shows.

The closings were part of Sealed Air’s global strategic review, the company said.

“This was an extremely difficult decision for Sealed Air to make, understanding the impact to our employees and the Rochester community,” said spokesman Ken Aurichio, in a statement. “The company considered a number of criteria – including operating costs, strategic location, proximity to other facilities  and levels of technology – and  it was determined we can best serve our global manufacturing strategy from other locations.”

Aurichio said the work done at the local plant would be transferred to other Sealed Air North American facilities through 2012 and part of 2013.

New Jersey-based Sealed Air employs roughly 26,000 workers at various sites and reported sales of $5.6 billion in 2011.
