Alabama Department of Mental Health to layoff 948 workers

The Alabama Department of Mental Health says it will lay off 948 workers and close all but two of its psychiatric hospitals.

According to the Birmingham News, the only hospitals that will remain open by May 2013 will be the replacement facility for Bryce Hospital, which will open in 2013, and Mary Starke Harper Geriatric Psychiatry Center, both of which are in Tuscaloosa.

The department is grappling with significant budget cuts and would be able to use the $106 million it spends annually to operate the hospitals to create new community care options.
