Toledo health care provider Mercy cuts 55 jobs

A confluence of economic problems is forcing a Toledo health care provider to lay off 55 employees, some of which will be cut as early as this week, the Toledo Blade reports.

Mercy is cutting mostly management and back-office positions, the newspaper reports, as it contends with lowered reimbursement rates and more uninsured patients. Laid-off workers will receive severance packages, the newspaper reports.

The northwest Ohio hospital chain laid off 71 workers in 2009 as it dealt with an increasing need for free patient care, the newspaper reports.
