Sears to layoff more than 80 employees in West Palm Beach


More than 80 West Palm Beach Sears Essentials employees were given notice on Monday that layoffs will come as early as April, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

The closing of Sears Essentials at 4560 Forest Hill Blvd. in West Palm Beach will leave 81 employees without jobs on April 12, said a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification on the FDEO website.

Kmart in Pompano Beach and the West Palm Beach Sears Essential store are among 120 locations set to close after Sears Holdings Corp. reported a slump in 2010 holiday sales. The company announced it will close up to 120 full-line Kmart and Sears stores across the country in order to generate up to $170 million in cash.

In December, Sears Holdings Corporation released an initial list of 79 stores scheduled to close.

It is unclear how many Kmart employees at 2421 N. Federal Highway in Pompano Beach will be lose their jobs. The actual closing dates of the stores has not been announced.
