Kruger Inc to layoff 100 workers

Kruger Inc., the Montreal-based producer of newsprint, glossy and coated papers, lumber, packaging and tissue products, is preparing to lay off almost 100 mill, forest and administrative workers at its Corner Brook Pulp and Paper unit in Newfoundland and Labrador, local reports said Monday.

Government sources confirmed that another cutback at the province’s only surviving newsprint mill is widely expected. The province has recently provided about $20 million to help the mill control its fibre and energy costs and fight the rising Canadian dollar.

Paper prices were generally weak through 2011 as demand continued to slip with the North American economy. Newsprint was listing at $640 a tonne though contract buyers paid less.
