Tacoma layoffs 100 police officers and firefighters

Nearly 100 police officers and firefighters in Tacoma received layoff notices on Monday.

Fifty six police officers are facing possible layoffs, as are 47 firefighters who were told Monday that they are on the list for termination. In all, 167 city employees received their layoff notices on Monday -- they will be without a job in one month. I

The layoffs are a part of the city's efforts to trim $30 million from the budget. Four fire stations, including historic Fire Station 13, are also slated to be closed.

The firefighters union warns the new round of cuts will result in longer response times for fire and medical calls. The city manager's office says it has cut as much as it can in other areas of city government, and is now left with no choice.
