Red Lion Christian Academy layoffs 15 employees

Administrators at Red Lion Christian Academy laid off 15 full- and part-time employees on Monday to cut spending at the private school, leaders said.

The school board needed to trim $600,000 from Red Lion's budget by today, when Glasgow Reformed Presbyterian Church in Bear takes over management, said the Rev. Chuck F. Betters, senior pastor of the church. Betters' congregation is in the process of acquiring the financially troubled Christian school, which is nearly $6 million in debt.

Superintendent Shannon Dare and the Rev. Jamie Swalm had previously resigned, Betters said. Layoffs this week included eight teachers, secretaries, administrative assistants and facilities staff.
