Layoffs at Sparrows Point steel mill in Baltimore County

Published reports indicate that workers at the Sparrows Point steel mill in Baltimore County are being laid off. Workers tell The Baltimore Sun that managers met with employees on Thursday and told some not to report to work next week.

The steel mill is now known by R-G Steel.  Neither company officials, or leaders of the United Steelworkers of America are commenting.

Baltimore Brew quotes sources who say manufacturing operations have been suspended because of "liquidity issues."

The website reports that union leaders are telling members that the "union and company are working to resolve this crisis."

The website also reports that the union is also telling its members not to talk to the media.

Aides to Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz told WBAL News that they have heard nothing from R-G Steel, but they have heard the rumors.

Under federal law, the company would have to give workers at least 60 days notice if they were going to close the plant permanently.

In recent years, the plant under various owners has suspended production around the holidays.
