US Airways layoffs 52 employees at Indianapolis International Airport

US Airways is laying off 52 full- and part-time employees at Indianapolis International Airport.

In a letter posted today on the website of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the airline said the layoffs are permanent and effective Jan. 9.

A spokeswoman for the Arizona-based US Airways said the workers are eligible for other job openings with the airline in other parts of the country.

The jobs affected include 30 full-time fleet service agents, 17 part-time agents and 5 team leads.

US Airways has announced a series of layoffs and relocations since early this year beginning with 176 jobs in 11 cities announced last January.

The layoffs affecting Indianapolis workers were announced to them in September.

The workforce changes track with flight reductions and other moves by the airline.

Most U.S. airlines have been trimming the number of flights or making other shifts to reduce the number of empty seats.
