Pine Hall Brick to layoff 20 employees in December

Pine Hall Brick plans to consolidate production at its two Madison plants and lay off 20 employees in December because of the slow recovery in new housing construction.

Officials with the Winston-Salem-based brick manufacturer say combining operations will create greater efficiency and improve financial and employment stability.

The plants are typically shut down in the winter for maintenance and inventory reasons, the company said. Plant 3 will not reopen; Plant 4 is expected to resume operations in late January or early February.

Pine Hall Brick currently employs 258 employees, 177 of whom are in Madison. The company is offering employees the opportunity to apply for voluntary layoffs.

The company’s other plants are not affected.

Company officials said production will return to Plant 3 if there is demand for more bricks.
