Afni Inc cuts 375 jobs

Officials with Afni Inc. have notified the Texas Workforce Commission that the company will close its 32,000-square-foot call center in Northwest San Antonio and lay off 375 people.

The layoffs will be effective Jan. 27, 2012. The center is located at 1560 Cable Ranch Road, Suite 2100.

Lori Boyce, spokeswoman for Afni, says the company has nationwide locations and currently has more capacity than it needs across its operations.

“The difficult decision to close our San Antonio center is essential to our overall ability to maintain our competitiveness and meet market pressures,” Boyce says.

Boyce says “a very small number” of the affected employees will be relocating to other markets. None of the affected employees were offered severance packages. However, Boyce says the company hopes to retain many of its San Antonio employees by offering them positions in a work-at-home program it is currently developing.

“Our work-from-home program has many advantages to our employees, including eliminating lengthy and expensive daily commutes, enjoying the comforts of home even while working, and much more schedule flexibility,” Boyce says.

Bloomington, Ill.-based Afni specializes in offering in-bound customer care, support, billing and collection services on behalf of communications and insurance companies. The company first entered the San Antonio market in 2006.
